AS TO WHY THE REPUBLICANS DID LESS WELL THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE
1. The Bill Clinton Campaign came up with a great insider slogan. “It’s the economy stupid”. It was effective. Today, the economy is growing, unemployment way way down for all groups, all for the first time in 12 years, so why did the Republicans not capitalize on this and understand “it’s the economy, stupid”. ? In fact, in many parts of the USA, people are virtually unaware of the economic statistics that are so positive. The Republican Party failed to communicate the facts and the optimism of what was happening in the US economy. A smart Republican Party would have had the sense to campaign on the economy. One might ask why they did not.
2. The Power of the Media. Half of the US voters really believe that Trump is a racist, an anti-semite, or just bad — not because there is any evidence showing he is, but because that is the picture created by the left-leaning media. They have taken statements out of context and created a narrative that is repeated all day long, all week long, and this is what, in many parts of the country, all people hear. I cannot tell you how many people who have told me “Trump is anti-semitic” and when I ask how do they know, they answer “well that’s what everyone says”. This kind of false accusation has an enormous effect on the Jewish vote, on the Black vote, and on the Hispanic vote. Many people really believe they have to vote for Democrats to stop Trump because of what they have been told he is. This is the worst of dirty politics. But it seems that libel and slander work ion American politics today, in the absence of any reasonable defense against defamation.
3. In Florida, at least, the vote was close because of Puerto Ricans who voted in South and central Florida for the Democrats, people who never returned to their island after the Hurricane. They have been convinced — against all the facts — that Trump did not help them, and the recent end of their benefits made that seem to them all the more so.
4. The Role of Money. The Democrats spent, overall 4 times the money the Republicans spent. In some races, the ratio was 10 to 1. This was the most expensive Mid-term election in history. And, frankly, most people would agree, that is wrong. But it is reality.
5. The Role of the “Race card”. The Race card was used extensively in Florida and Georgia, not only to get Black votes, but to intimidate others in voting for Black candidates that they might have had reservations about. In Florida, many people in South Florida told me that they have to vote for Gillum, in spite of his associations with radical leftists and anti-semites, to show the world they are not racists. So Black Candidates that used the race card did quite well, either winning contests or coming close. But Black candidates that refused to use the race card did less well. I’m not sure what that says about America — whether it is a racist country or just a country that is afraid of being called racist.
6. But one of the biggest reasons Republicans failed - Republicans leaders did not support their party or at best were ambivalent about supporting the President. Speaker Ryan attacking the President less than 48 hours before the vote on the Birthright issue. Flake, attacking the Administration on everything because of his personal animosity to Trump. But, maybe the biggest failure, is the failure of the Justice Department to effectively pursue cases against the illegal activities of former Democrat officials.
